John R. Gurney

1902-1997

Dan Gurney's father, John R. Gurney, who celebrated his 95th birthday in June, passed away August 6th following his wife who died in January at 94.

 A graduate of Oberlin College and Harvard  Business School, Mr. Gurney
studied music in  Paris in the 1920's and upon his return to the  United
States, joined the Metropolitan Opera  in New York as leading bass
baritone. He also  went on concert tours through the United  States and
South America. He was a gifted  portrait artist in pen and ink as well
as an  accomplished furniture designer and builder.
 After his retirement from the MET, the family  moved to Riverside,
California and later to  Corona del Mar, which remained his home.
Fiercely independent, he drove a car every day  until a week before his
death, and was a  knowledgeable and enthusiastic racing fan.

He was survived by his son Dan, daughter Celissa, 8 Grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
