Robby Gordon Fastest in Morning Practice Christine Hogan - Motorsport News International

Morning practice started on time at 10 am on another warm, clear day in Surfers Paradise, Australia. When the green flag flew the track temperature was 120F with an ambient temperature of 84F. Dario Franchitti will start the race this afternoon from pole position, ahead of Alex Zanardi. Dennis Vitolo, the slowest qualifier, will not start the race. CART officials determined that the pit lane will only hold 27 cars safely, and not the full compliment of 28.

This was the second session of the weekend to run under a green flag from start to finish. Not many cars completed a full lap in the first 5 minutes. The early leader was Helio Castro-Neves, having had both his cars repaired overnight after yesterday morning's crashes. He was followed by Arnd Meier and Alex Barron.

Patrick Carpentier and Tony Kanaan both had minor incidents at turns 8 and 3, respectively. The both slid into the run off area and continued with no damage to their cars. JJ Lehto moved to the top of the standings with a 1:36.449, with Scott Pruett just 8 thousandths of a second behind. Bobby Rahal was in third place with 1:37.140.

Turn 3 saw some more action with JJ Lehto locking up and sliding into the run-off area. He also continued without damage. Max Papis was less lucky as his car had to be pulled to safety after he slowed dramatically entering turn 1 and stalled at turn 2. Paul Tracy took the lead with 1:35.334 from JJ Lehto, who improved to a 1:35.522, and Robby Gordon on 1:35.739.

Christian Fittipaldi was the next driver to slide into the run-off at turn 8, while Scott Pruett did likewise at turn 3. Neither sustained any damage to the car. Richie Hearn moved into second place behind Paul Tracy and ahead of JJ Lehto with a 1:35.398. With only two minutes remaining in the session, Tony Kanaan clocked the fastest lap so far with a 1:35.113.

In the final two minutes, both Robby Gordon and Alex Zanardi went faster than Kanaan, clocking 1:34.808 and 1:35.040 respectively. At the conclusion of the session, the top 20 drivers were within 2 seconds of Robby Gordon's fastest lap.
