Honda Indy 300 Qualifying Report

Franchitti Fastest in Oz

Bettering his pole-winning performance of a year ago, Dario Franchitti set a new lap record and picked up a valuable championship point today, qualifying on the pole for Sunday's Honda Indy 300 here in Surfers Paradise. It was the Team KOOL Green driver's second pole of the season, and the 13th for Honda, a new single season record for the manufacturer.

Franchitti now trails Honda-powered championship rival Juan Montoya by 12 points heading into tomorrow's penultimate race of the 1999 FedEx Championship season. Franchitti's teammate, Paul Tracy, was quickest in first-round qualifying, but damaged his car in a crash during practice this morning. If the Canadian had switched to his backup car, he would have been forced by Champ Car rules to also withdraw his time from the earlier qualifying. Electing to stay with Friday's qualifying dropped Tracy to fourth on the final grid, where be can start either car tomorrow.

DARIO FRANCHITTI (#27 Team KOOL Green Honda) Pole qualifier, 2nd pole of the season, 13th pole for Honda: "I think every (championship) point counts at the moment. First we went out and put in a 'banker' lap, then came in and made a couple of changes to the car. I wasn't real happy with the car at first. Then we went out or the second set and just threw everything at it, attacking everywhere, trying a couple of new things and braking later than ever before the chicanes. I was a bit surprised by the margin, but I'll take it."
