Adrian Fernandez of Patrick Racing propelled himself into the thick of the FedEx Championship Series championship race when he drove to victory in the 2000 Honda Indy 300 before an enthusiastic gathering of 107,785 on Australia's Gold Coast. On a day when five of the top six championship contenders failed to earn any championship points, Fernandez (Tecate/Quaker State/Patrick Racing Ford Reynard) picked up 20 by claiming his second victory of the season and the seventh of his career. The effort drew him within five points of championship leader Gil de Ferran heading into the FedEx Championship Series season finale at California Speedway. De Ferran (Marlboro Honda Reynard) exited after completing only one lap due to contact with polesitter Juan Montoya (Target Toyota Lola) and Dario Franchitti (KOOL Honda Reynard). Fernandez averaged 81.607 miles per hour and finished 0.324 seconds ahead of Team Rahal's Kenny Brack (Shell Ford Reynard), whose runner-up performance matched a career best. Jimmy Vasser (Target Toyota Lola) finished third for his second consecutive podium result, following a victory at Houston. De Ferran departed Australia with 153 points and the FedEx Championship Series lead, followed by Fernandez with 148 and Paul Tracy (KOOL Honda Reynard) with 134.
