This year's Honda Indy 300 'fever' is starting to take shape with the construction of the 4.5km beachside circuit. At 4am today, to ensure minimum traffic disruption, the first of nine pedestrian bridges was bolted into place at the northern end of the circuit. The banner will be a daily reminder to commuters in Surfers Paradise about this year's 10th anniversary event. The job of creating the venue for Honda Indy 300 is no small feat with more than 2,500 concrete blocks, all weighing a minimum 4.5 tonnes, being used as the foundation for the circuit, which will be totally constructed in the next 70 days. Gold Coast based engineering company Weathered and Howe and the Honda Indy 300 operations team, will oversee the 11-week construction procedure. General Manager Geoff Jones said that everything possible was being done to ensure the least amount of disruption to residents and traffic during construction. "This is our tenth year of building the circuit and we have turned the procedure into a very slick operation with very few disruptions to the Gold Coast people. However, some disturbance is unavoidable and I want to thank everyone for their patience during the construction period," Mr Jones said. 1999 Bartercard Miss Indy, Kyly Boldy was on hand this morning, lending her support to the commencement of construction. Miss Boldy reigns as the current Miss Indy in the lead up to the Honda Indy 300, until the 2000 Miss Indy is crowned in the few days before the event. "I am looking forward to doing my part in the promotion of the Honda Indy 300 in the next few months," Miss Boldy said. The Gold Coast media will be notified of times and delays of any period of construction in which disruption cannot be avoided.
