BROOKLYN, Mich. - Team KOOL Green teammates Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy made hard charges through the field today to finish 2nd and 7th, respectively, in the Michigan 500. The finish moves Franchitti to second in the FedEx Championship Series points standings, just four points behind Kenny Brack, while Tracy advances two positions to eighth.
Patrick Carpentier won the 250-lap race by a mere .243 seconds over Franchitti and Michel Jourdain, Jr., who ended the race in a photo finish for second and third.
Both TKG drivers came from the back of the 25-car field in a competitive race that saw 60 lead changes. Franchitti started 25th due to problems in the Saturday practice session that set the grid when qualifying was rained out, but steadily moved to the front to take the lead for the first time on lap 142. Franchitti led eight times for a total of 17 laps. Tracy encountered problems in the pits and fell to 24th, running three laps down at one point in the race, but consistently moved forward and also benefited from late-race attrition.
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(Started 4th / Finished 7th / Currently 8th in the standings with 52 points)
"We were three laps down at one point. We were lucky to get the points that we did. I had the best car out there, but we just had too many problems on our pit stops. I didn't have to work that hard because the KOOL car was so good. I could drive to the front, but you can't pull away from anyone, so you can't get your lap back. As soon as you get to the front, guys start going by you again.
"Unfortunately, our regular fueler broke a bone in his foot earlier this week and we had to put a new guy in there for the race. It takes a lot of getting used to and we should have given him more practice."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD: (Started 25th / Finished 2nd / Currently 2nd in the standings with 81 points)
"Now, that is proper racing. The whole day was pretty exciting, let alone the last few laps. Michel (Jourdain) and I were doing a good job of getting away from the others a bit, and I knew if it was just Michel and I on the last lap, I could probably pass him. But with Tagliani in the equation, it changed things. He and Pat (Carpentier) had a pretty well-choreographed move. I'm really happy for Pat, though, it's nice to see him win one. It was a good, fun race and Team KOOL Green did a hell of a job in the pits. It's not last to first, but last to second isn't too bad, and we picked up some good points."
