MONTEREY, CALIF. (September 9, 2000) - Team KOOL Green's Dario Franchitti will line up on the inside of the second row and teammate Paul Tracy will start on the seventh row following final qualifying for tomorrow's CART FedEx Championship race at Laguna Seca Raceway. Like most of the front runners, both Franchitti and Tracy were unable to improve on their qualifying times from Friday. Franchitti's best lap on Friday was a 1 minute, 8.148 seconds, for an average speed of 118.225 mph. Tracy recorded a quick lap on Friday of 1:08.898, an average speed of 116.938 mph.
Helio Castroneves and Gil de Ferran hold onto the front row spots they earned yesterday. Castroneves earned the pole with a best lap of 1:07.722 (118.969 mph), while de Ferran turned a fast lap on Friday of 1:07.823 (118.792 mph).
The drivers take to the track for a half-hour warm-up session tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. The 83-lap race, round 16 of 20 in the FedEx Championship Series, is slated to take the green flag at 12:00 noon (All times are Pacific Daylight Time).
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA-REYNARD: (13th with a lap time of 1:08.898 seconds / 116.938 mph)
"I just never got a lap in so we didn't go faster than yesterday. The track was really slow in the first part of the session and no one was going fast. On my second set of tires, we went out and the track went red, we went back out and it went red again. It's disappointing to never get a chance to put in a fast lap. One lap felt really great, but I was surprised when the time wasn't there. I think the track wasn't as good as it was yesterday and the KOOL car was only slightly better, so it's hard to say just how much better we would have been had we gotten a clear lap. It's going to make for a tough day tomorrow, but we have a good race car and we'll do the best we can to collect as many points as possible."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA-REYNARD: (3rd with a lap time of 1:08.148 seconds / 118.225 mph)
"Between the red flags and me spinning on my first set of tires, it was a very frustrating session. I was a tenth (of a second) up coming into the last turn on my first set of tires and I looped it. On the second set it was just so frustrating. Every time I got the tires up to temperature and pressure, the red flag would come out. It's nobody's fault; everyone was trying their hardest. I felt the KOOL car was good enough to challenge the two guys up front (Castroneves & de Ferran). It's not the best car I ever had, but we're working on it. If we can make some real improvements overnight, we could be in good shape for the race. The Honda engine is just awesome. It's the quickest down the straights and it's got great driveablility. They've worked hard this year and they're really on top of their game."
