Max Papis was in the fight for the pole all afternoon. Unfortunately a flurry of activity in the sessions closing moments, capped off with identical pole times of 73.056 seconds turned in by Montoya and Franchitti, relegated Papis to start tomorrow's race from inside row three.

Kenny Brack, who was also challenging for a front row start, tagged the wall with the left front wheel damaging the suspension with a little over five minutes left in the session. The damage was not extensive and the incident will not affect the car for tomorrow's race.

MAX PAPIS -7- Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 5th -

"We did a very good job. Unfortunately on my fast lap I ran up on Moreno and that slowed me a bit. We got a little shafted there. It was a different day than yesterday. Yesterday we nailed it right every time, but today that wasn't the case. Actually, I thought the time we put up today would have been good for the top three. But, we are okay. I just hope tomorrow's race is going to be better than last years' when I went out on the first turn."

KENNY BRACK -8- Shell Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 7th -

"We are always pushing it in qualifying. Unfortunately I tagged the wall with my right front tire and bent the suspension. The car is fast. We should be in good shape tomorrow. The damage isn't that bad. I am sure the Shell team will get it fixed."

MICHAEL ANDRETTI -6- Big Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 12th -

"The car is just not good. It's not working for us right now. The penalty hurt us a bit too, but that's not why we aren't further up on the grid. This is the kind of place you need to gain as many positions in qualifying that you can. Qualifying here is so critical."

CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI -11- Big Kmart/Route 66 Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 8th -

"The engine ran perfect today. The driveability is great. We just didn't have a good setup. At least we are in the fourth row - it's a whole lot better than being in the sixth row. It's going to be a long day tomorrow, but I haven't given up yet."

YOU HAVE BEEN KNOWN AS A VERY GOOD WET WEATHER DRIVER. IF IT RAINS TOMORROW, HOW MUCH IS THAT GOING TO HELP YOU?

"A lot of people have the wrong impression. I really don't like driving in the wet. But if it's wet, well, we will get on with the job. Am I comfortable out there? No. The conditions are terrible. You can't see or anything, but you just need to make the best out of it."

PATRICK CARPENTIER -32- Player's Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 9th -

"The red flag hurt us a bit. The big problem was that we lost time yesterday and ended up in the slow group today. If we were in second group with the same car we would be in the one minute thirteen second range. The rubber was just starting to get laid down on the track at the end of the session. So tomorrow, we will see what we can do."

ARE YOU CONCERNED WITH THE THREAT OF RAIN FOR TOMORROW?

"Team Player's has always been good in the rain."

ADRIAN FERNANDEZ -40- Tecate/Quaker State Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 14th -

"We improved the car but it's still not where we want it. At the moment we are struggling with a lack of grip. We just can't get a good lap in. The session had so many incidents in it that it was hard to get a read on the session. On my fast lap I came upon a yellow and had to slow for it."

ROBERTO MORENO -20- Visteon Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 10th -

"The car is not working well for us. We have struggled all weekend. We have made improvements, but just not as much as we need to. We are going to have to rely on team strategy again to get up to the leaders. The Visteon guys have worked so hard this weekend, but we are going to have to work just as hard tomorrow to get up front."

TARSO MARQUES -34- Panasonic Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 22nd -

"The car was better that it has been all weekend. We changed the geometry of the suspension but we still have a long way to go. We are struggling a bit, but we are hanging in there and I sure we can get it better. It may take a while, but we are working very hard at it."
