Fontana, CA, October 30, 1999 - The final race showdown between Honda-powered drivers Dario Franchitti and Juan Montoya for the 1999 CART PPG Cup continued though qualifying today at California Speedway, with Montoya qualifying third and Franchitti eighth for Sunday's Marlboro 500.

Franchitti, with a series high 11 podium (top three) finishes this season, leads Montoya by nine points going into tomorrow's race. Another top three finish for Franchitti would secure the title for the Scotsman even if Montoya were to win.

Jimmy Vasser also had a strong qualifying run to start fourth, while Gil de Ferran bounced back from a spin in his first qualifying attempt to put his Walker Racing entry 12th on the grid. Tomorrow's 500 mile race starts at 3:00 p.m. EST, with live television coverage on ESPN.

JUAN MONTOYA (#4 Target/Chip Ganassi Racing Honda): "I'm a little disappointed about missing the pole, and the championship point. But it's okay. My car was perfect, there wasn't another tenth of a mile an hour left in it. It's just the wind. When the first guys went out, the track conditions were better, then the wind picked up and it's getting stronger all the time."

DARIO FRANCHITTI (#27 Team KOOL Green Honda): "I think we got everything out of the car that we could today. The wind's gusting quite heavily right now and it's just adding a lot of drag on the car. We're in contention. If we're still around and running strong after the last pit stop we'll he in good shape for the win."
