The final race of the 1999 CART FedEx Championship Series is a battle between Honda-powered drivers Dario Franchitti and Juan Montoya for the championship and it was the Target/Chip Ganassi Racing driver firing the opening salvo today, third overall in opening practice action here at California Speedway.

Still, Montoya was just 17-hundreths of a second quicker than his Scottish rival, who was 11th on the day for Team KOOL Green. Their teammates, who also may play a spoiler role in Sunday's 500 mile contest, also featured strongly in practice. Jimmy Vasser was fourth overall, only three hundreths of a second behind Montoya, while Paul Tracy slotted his Team KOOL Green entry ninth on the day.

Tony Kanaan and Naoki Hattori ran 12th and 13th, but Hattori's crash in the morning practice sent the Japanese rookie to the hospital for observation. His status for the rest of the weekend is yet to be determined.

JUAN MONTOYA (#4 Target/Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) 3rd fastest today: "I think it was a good day, we spent most of it trying to setup for the race. It's difficult to say who is really quick, because there was, a lot of drafting out there. Our main goal this weekend is to beat Dario (Franchitti),"
