Fontana, CA (October 28, 1998) -- CART's FedEx Championship comes to a close this weekend with the series' nineteenth round, the Marlboro 500 at the high-banked, 2.0-mile California Speedway. Alex Zanardi wrapped-up the championship almost two months ago, but he's still intent on equaling the CART record of eight wins in a season scored by Michael Andretti in 1991 and Al Unser Jr in 1994.

"I'm always motivated to do what I love which is to drive racing cars," Zanardi commented. "I don't need any extra motivation to do my job because I love my job and I'm looking forward to my last CART race in California. I would love to go out a winner."

Second place in CART's championship is still up for grabs, although after finishing second to Zanardi in Australia two weeks ago Scotsman Dario Franchitti has a twelve-point margin over Jimmy Vasser. The 1996 champion could therefore take second in the championship if he finishes among the top three and Franchitti doesn't make the finish. Fourth-placed Adrian Fernandez also could steal the championship runner-up place from Franchitti if he wins on Sunday and Franchitti fails to finish.

Favorites to win this race must include Ganassi teammates Zanardi and Vasser and Greg Moore who beat both of them across the line to win the U.S. 500 at Michigan Speedway at the end of July.
