FIRESTONE FIREHAWK FAST FACTS
CART FedEx Championship Series
Molson Indy at Concord Pacific Place, Vancouver, B.C., Canada
August 31-September 2, 2001
Race distance: 90 laps, 160.29 miles.
Firestone tires supplied this weekend: approx. 860 dry (based on 7 sets per car for 28 cars); approx. 460 rain (based on 4 sets per car for 28 cars) Firestone winners at Vancouver: Mauricio Gugelmin (1997), Dario Franchitti ('98), Juan Montoya ('99), Paul Tracy (2000). Getting a grip: The Firestone Firehawk racing radial for this weekend's competition at Vancouver is an improved version of the tire supplied to teams at last year's event. While it features the same construction as employed last year, the new compound will provide more grip. Teams have used it in earlier CART street course events this year at Long Beach and Toronto, and have given it high marks for its performance capabilities.
Al Speyer, Bridgestone/Firestone Motorsports Director, on tire selection for Vancouver: "Our engineers meet with teams after every event to discuss and evaluate tire performance. After last year's race at Vancouver, we heard the durability of the Firehawks was superb. Several drivers told us a tire compound with additional grip would allow them to maneuver more aggressively on this demanding course. We listened, and we developed a compound that provides more grip than the tire we brought here last year. That responsiveness to team and driver requests isn't just a demonstration of our willingness to make changes; it's a demonstration of our technological capabilities in bringing better tires to events - tires that last long, run hard and have the grip best suited to any given track. Rain or shine, fans at Vancouver are going to see these amazing cars turn some very impressive laps in Sunday's race."
