CART FedEx Championship Series
Honda Indy 300 at Queensland, Australia
October 26-28, 2001
Race distance: 65 laps, 181.675 miles and 292.378 kilometers.
Firestone tires supplied this weekend: about 750 dry (7 sets per car for 26 cars); about 450 rain (4 sets per car for 26 cars).
Past Firestone winners at Surfers Paradise: Jimmy Vasser (1996), Scott Pruett ('97), Alex Zanardi ('98), Dario Franchitti ('99), Adrian Fernandez (2000).
Bringing back a winner: Firestone's unmatched engineering corps decided to return to Surfers Paradise with the same tire specification as a year ago. The tires performed flawlessly and were instrumental in helping Adrian Fernandez take the checkered flag in 2000, so the decision to return with the identical compound/construction make-up was an easy one. This street course specification also was used earlier this year at Detroit and Houston. It is the "harder" of the two Firestone street course specs, with durability over the long high-speed Surfers straightaways the predominant factor in opting for this spec over the "softer" street course version.
Al Speyer, Bridgestone/Firestone Motorsports Director, on importance of Australia race:
"With our 100th CART win now in the record book, it's appropriate to us at Firestone Racing that the 101st victory should come this weekend Down Under. It was on the streets of Surfers Paradise that Firestone achieved a very significant victory 50x00bd years ago. Jimmy Vasser kicked off the 1996 season with a win here, the first Firestone triumph on a CART road or street course. It was also the first of three consecutive victories Vasser reeled off for himself and Firestone to open the season. That set the stage for Vasser to claim the '96 championship, which gave Firestone the title in just our second year of CART competition. We are about to extend our string of season champions to six in a row, and ran the former tire competition out of the series in the process. Needless to say, that win by Vasser, and the four others Firestone has achieved in Australia in the years since, are indicative of the way Firestone has continued to develop, design and produce the best race tires around, in any series. We're proud of our success and the compliments we receive from teams and drivers, and will continue working just as hard to see that both continue."
