CART FedEx Championship Series
Target Grand Prix at Chicago Motor Speedway, Cicero, Ill.
July 27-29, 2001
Race distance: 225 laps, 231.525 miles.
Firestone tires supplied this weekend: more than 700 (based on 7 sets per car for 25 cars).
Staggers available: 1 (approximately 0.43 inches).
Past Firestone winners at Chicago: Juan Montoya (1999), Cristiano da Matta (2000).
Mastering the mile: Firestone has collected 12 consecutive short-oval wins in the FedEx Championship series, the first six against direct tire competition. Firestone has supplied every team since the beginning of the 2000 season, adding six more short-oval victories in that span. The FedEx Championship Series remains open to any manufacturer willing to take on the rigors and challenges it presents.
Al Speyer, Bridgestone/Firestone Motorsports Director, on the tire selection for Chicago:
"Firestone has developed a solid tire for the CART mile ovals and we will employ that same specification this weekend in Chicago. This tire spec was utilized earlier this year at the previous mile ovals (Nazareth and Milwaukee), not to mention all four short ovals on the schedule last year (Nazareth, Milwaukee, Chicago and Gateway), so it is a proven commodity. Mile ovals always feature intense, tight racing and the drivers are dependent on their tires for quick, controlled reactions in those close quarters. They've come to rely on the Firestone Firehawks without giving it a second thought. Knowing they'll have the same construction/compound mix that has performed so well in recent mile-oval races will be an added boost to their confidence and should enhance the exciting competition on race day yet again. Firestone is pleased to play that supporting role."
Eight different drivers have won the 10 races that have been run to date in the 2001 FedEx Championship Series. Firestone foresees a ninth different driver taking the checkered flag this weekend at Chicago Motor Speedway.
