Adrian Fernandez put his stamp on the final pre-qualifying practice session for the 250-mile CART race at the Milwaukee Mile by bettering his leading time from Friday's practice session. His time of 21.883 (169.776 mph) set with 2 minutes to go in Saturday's session, wasn't needed as he had already recorded a time good enough to lead the session.

The first half of the practice session, featuring the slower group of cars from Friday's sessions, was led by Tony Kanaan (22.171 seconds, 167.570 mph), followed by Scott Dixon, Tora Takagi and Shinji Nakano. That part of the session was cut short by two minutes when Patrick Carpentier backed his Reynard into the wall.

The first group's times held until about 15 minutes remained, when first Jimmy Vasser, then Fernandez topped the list. The session was stopped with ten minutes remaining when Mario Dominguez got his car loose exiting turn two and brushed the back straight wall with his rear wing.

At the end of the session, Fernandez was the only driver who could improve his earlier time. Fernandez led Vasser, Kanaan, Dixon, Bruno Junqueira, Cristiano da Matta, Paul Tracy, Dominguez, Dario Franchitti and Takagi for the session.
