Visteon/Patrick Racing'S Oriol Servia looking to show improvement at Grand Prix at Road America.
JACKSON, MI - - AUGUST 14, 2002 - - Visteon/Patrick Racing driver Oriol Servia will be looking to improve on last week's tenth place finish at the CART Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio when the FedEx Championship Series moves to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin for the Grand Prix at Road America, August 16-18.
Servia, behind the wheel of the #20 Visteon/Patrick Racing entry, with Toyota power and Bridgestone tires, earned his first top-ten finish and scored his first points in just his second start with the team. Having spent two races acclimating himself to his new environment the 28-year-old native of Pals, Catalonia, Spain, feels he is ready to move up to the next level beginning at Elkhart Lake.
"I have run two races now with the Visteon/Patrick Racing Team so we are more familiar and comfortable with each other," Servia said. "That is important because it will help us work together better as we develop the car and get a competitive setup," he explained. "The Visteon/Patrick Racing Team has made a lot of progress over the last two races. We have to improve our qualifying position in the upcoming races, but with what we have learned I think we will be in good shape heading into Elkhart Lake," Servia noted.
In addition to feeling more comfortable with the team, Servia is headed to a track where both he and Patrick Racing have enjoyed success. Patrick Racing scored victories on the challenging 4.048-mile, 14-turn Road America permanent road circuit in 1986 and 1988, while Servia finished in the top-ten in both his previous starts placing tenth in 2000 and 2001.
"Elkhart Lake is a track I have always liked, so I am looking forward to racing there this weekend," Servia said. "I have finished in the top-ten both times I raced there and I know the team has a history of success at Elkhart Lake. I think another factor in favor of the Visteon/Patrick Racing Team is the fact that the Reynard chassis has shown it is good on tracks, like Elkhart Lake, that have fast corners," commented Servia.
Now in his third CART season (45 starts), Servia began the year running the first three races with Pac West Racing. When PWR ceased operations he sat out the next six events before making his debut with Visteon/Patrick Racing at Vancouver on July 30. Servia finished 14th in his inaugural event with the team after a gearbox problem knocked him from the race while running in ninth place. The resident of Miami, Florida, has finished in the points in four of his five starts this year and in the top-ten three times with a best showing of sixth at Motegi, Japan. He is currently in 19th place in the championship standings with 16 points.
The Grand Prix at Road America will be televised on Sunday, August 18 at 3:00 PM (ET) on Speed Channel. The pre-race show will air from 2:30 - 3:00 PM (ET).
