Franchitti third quickest at Road America.
Dario Franchitti led the Honda-powered field today in first-round qualifying for Sunday's Motorola 220, running third quickest around the 4-mile Road America circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
Just six-hundredths of a second behind Franchitti came owner/driver Adrian Fernandez, taking part in his first event since suffering hip and thigh injuries in a crash during the closing laps of the Molson Indy Vancouver three weeks ago.
Paul Tracy ran as high as fourth in the session, but slipped back to eighth in the closing minutes. Michael Andretti rounded out the top ten, four-tenths ahead of Shinji Nakano in the second Fernandez Racing entry.
Tony Kanaan's day was halted by mechanical problems in both the morning practice and afternoon practice sessions, leaving him 18th in the field. Saturday's final qualifying takes place at 2:45 p.m. EDT, with live television coverage on the Speed Channel network.
Dario Franchitti (#27 Team KOOL Green Honda) Third Fastest Qualifier: "This morning we discovered a problem with the (chassis) setup after the practice session, so we had to go back and change to where we should have been this morning. Obviously those changes worked. My second qualifying run was better than the first. We'd planned for it to be a long one, but at the start of the run I got caught out by someone coming out of the pits and had to slow up a bit, and then the next two laps I made two small mistakes which cost me time. The last lap is where it all came together. 'Canada Corner' [Turn 12] was tough as a few guys had gone off there and a lot of dirt and debris had gotten on the track, so you had to watch yourself through there. Other than that the track is in good shape. This is a great facility. Road America is the way a race track should be - fast and challenging."
