RuSPORT today garnered their second provisional front-row qualification of the season as reigning Roshfrans Rookie of the Year A.J. Allmendinger led the second-year team for the first qualifying session of this weekend's inaugural West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix of Edmonton. Despite brushing the wall and having to make minor repairs, the #10 Western Union crew rallied and delivered the new track record in the final minutes of the session. Allmendinger's final flyer just edged out his teammate Justin Wilson to capture his first provisional pole as well as earn a championship point and secure a front-row start for Sunday's race. Final qualifying for the Grand Prix of Edmonton takes place tomorrow at 2:00 PM (GMT).
Justin Wilson "I'm obviously really happy that the CDW team gave me a great car right off the bat. I think RuSPORT came here with a good setup and we've just been able to work on that and get quicker as the day progressed. We're both very excited about the prospects of having a good race here. It's just getting used to the track and understanding what this circuit requires. So far we're very pleased, and hopefully we can be up there tomorrow."
A.J. Allmendinger "The Western Union car was good from the first practice on. You know, I tried to make it hard on my team once again. I think they're getting tired of that. I decided to hit the wall with the black tires. I found they still don't move. When you try to move them out a little bit more, they still don't move! The team did a great job to get the car back together. I mean, luckily it was only a flat tire. But I thought for how hard I hit, there was going to be more damage. You know, my teammate keeps making it hard on me. I did a couple of laps that were a few tenths off of him, and I didn't know if there was much left. Just kind of closed my eyes and hung on for a lap, and luckily got the pole."
Jeremy Dale, Team President "Congratulations first to both A.J. and Justin for a job very well done. It's always a big challenge to come to a new racetrack and both the Western Union and CDW crews did a tremendous job rising up to that challenge. Tomorrow calls for rain, but I'd like to see it stay dry and watch these two talented drivers go after each other again."
