Justin got his Edmonton weekend off to a solid start, posting the 4th fastest time in Friday's first qualifying session (60.251 seconds, 117.887 mph). His team-mate Cristiano da Matta was 5th fastest with a lap of 60.412 seconds.

The session was interrupted at a critical point when Forsythe's A.J. Allmendinger crashed at Turn 1, shortly after the leading drivers started their first stints. The stoppage compromised everyone's qualifying strategies and in the end it boiled down to who could make it count during the final few laps of the session.

In the morning practice session Justin had been second fastest behind A.J., and it looked like a two way battle would develop between RuSPORT and Forsythe. But Newman-Haas found more speed for qualifying and Sebastien Bourdais guaranteed himself a front-row starting slot for Sunday with his provisional pole time of 59.895. His team-mate Bruno Junqueira pipped Justin for 3rd as the chequered flag fell. Forsythe's Paul Tracy was 2nd fastest.

"Today was okay, but we've got a lot of work to do to be back on the pace tomorrow", said Justin. "We're not too far away, but there is room for improvement. We just need to work on the stability of the car and I think it will come. Unfortunately we got caught in traffic in provisional qualifying and some cars went off as well, so it got a bit messy. But I think we'll be better tomorrow."
