Herdez Racing driver Mario Dominguez set fast time in the Friday afternoon practice session, topping Walker Racing's Darren Manning by turning a time of 59.189 seconds (128.091 mph) around the 2.019 mile course on the runways of Cleveland's Burke Lakefront Airport.
Dominguez' fast time was nearly half of a second faster than he could manage in Thursday night's first round of qualifying, his time then good for only 9th on the provisional grid.
Manning was also able to improve on his Friday times; his 59.362 second time an improvement of four tenths of a second from last night.
Third this afternoon was Sebastian Bourdais. The Newman/Haas racing driver had been setting the pace in the practice sessions yesterday and was also third fastest in qualifying.
The session was cut short when Max Papis spun and stalled the PKR Lola with 8 minutes remaining. At that point a heavy storm was approaching and the teams elected to abandon pit road instead of going back out for the remaining time of the session.
Paul Tracy, the provisional polesitter, had a difficult time this afternoon, struggling with the handling on the Forsythe Lola. He was able to get the fourth fastest time in the session, but was understeering through the middle section of the course and was clearly not pleased.
Tracy's teammate, Patrick Carpentier, who was runner-up in qualifying yeaterday, struggled and only managed a 59.865 second time for his best lap today, a full second slower than he went last night and only good for the eleventh best in this practice.
Behind Tracy on today's list was the winner of the most recent Champ Car round at Portland, Adrian Fernandez, followed by the American Spirit Team Johannson teammates, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Jimmy Vasser.
