Awarded to the driver in his first year of CART competition who garners the most championship points during the season, Dom?nguez joins a list of legendary drivers including Bobby Rahal (1982), Stefan Johansson (1992), Nigel Mansell (1993), and Alex Zanardi (1996) as well as currently active stars of open wheel racing like Jacques Villeneuve (1994), Gil de Ferran (1995), Patrick Carpentier (1997), Tony Kanaan (1998), Juan Montoya (1999), Kenny Brack (2000), and Scott Dixon (2001).

While the award was first presented in CART's inaugural year (1979) it was renamed in 1988 to honor Jim Trueman, founder of Red Roof Inns lodging chain, owner of Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and founder of TrueSports Racing Team, winners of the 1986 and 1987 CART Championships.

The award includes the Jim Trueman Memorial Trophy as well as a $50,000 check from the Trueman family.
