Fernandez fastest at new Denver venue.

The CART FedEx Championship Series is making its first visit to a new temporary street circuit around downtown Denver's Pepsi Center, and it was Honda-powered Adrian Fernandez leading the field in first round qualifying action today.

Fernandez's Indianapolis-based team built up a new car in just two days, to replace one damaged in last week's Montreal race, yet was one of the quickest cars throughout the day. Also quick in both sessions today was the Mo Nunn entry of Tony Kanaan, who ended qualifying third quickest despite a pair of spins.

The Team Green entries of Michael Andretti, Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy all struggled with "loose" handling - a lack of rear tire grip - in their Honda-powered Lola cars, and ended the day in 10th, 12th and 13th. Shinji Nakano, in the second Fernandez Racing entry, ran strongly in the morning practice, but also sustained damage in a late-session crash with Christian Fittipaldi and finished the afternoon qualifying in 14th.

Saturday's final qualifying takes place at 3:45 p.m. EDT, with live television coverage on the Speed Channel network.

Adrian Fernandez (#51 Tecate/Quaker State/Telmex/Fernandez Racing Honda) Qualified 1st:

"Our car has been good all day, we unloaded off the truck and were fast compared to the rest (of the field) almost from the start of practice. I'm still learning the best braking points, and that makes it difficult to be real consistent without running a lot of laps in succession. But being the quickest today is the best possible reward for our crew, who have worked very hard this week and throughout this four week (consecutive race) stretch."
