Allmendinger On Provisional Pole at Denver
Denver, Colorado -- Friday, August 11, 2006 -- A.J. Allmendinger secured a front row start for the Grand Prix of Denver Sponsored by Bridgestone today by capturing the Provisional Pole with a lap of 1m00.714s. Allmendinger managed to get a clear lap in a session that saw various interruptions by red flags and in which most competitors went out early because of the threat of rain. Paul Tracy had contact with the Turn 5 tire wall at the beginning of qualifying, and due to the damage done to the #3 INDECK Champ Car he was not able to finish out the session.
"The Forsythe Indeck team gave me a good car to start with today. I think from last year when both P.T. and Mario were really quick here, that gave us a good starting point. We just kept working on it. The session was a bit difficult initially. I really only got to put one lap in early because when I got going, Paul had his accident. I had just gotten my tires up to temp and did my one lap. We went back out there and got a chance on the reds and really just waited too long to try to get them up to temperature. I was very fortunate to get one good lap in and really go out there and be able to get the pole."
"It's a shame, we have a pretty good car and we didn't get to show it today. I was coming into Turn 5 and there was a car in the run off, I came into the corner and I was only a few inches off the line but this track gets really slippery off line so the rear just went. The car was pretty quick on old tires so I'm sure that tomorrow when we put the stickers on we'll be right up there fighting for the Pole Position."
