De Ferran's 2d Annual Oscar Picks

How do you relax when you live life at 200 mph? For Gil de Ferran, driver of the Valvoline/Cummins Honda-Reynard, catching a good movie is just the ticket.

"Movies seem to take me away from where I am and get my mind off of other things," said de Ferran. "It's like going for a little trip for two hours. Good movies certainly have that effect on me and I find that relaxing."

For the second straight year, de Ferran offers his Academy Awards predictions and brief comments for the top three categories. The Oscars' telecast is Sunday, March 21, the night of the season-opening Marlboro Grand Prix at Homestead.

Best Picture: Saving Private Ryan. "Very strong," says de Ferran. "It is impossible to be indifferent to the story."

Best Actor: Tom Hanks, Saving Private Ryan. "This role showed how versatile an actor he is." Best Actress: Gwyneth Paltrow, Shakespeare in Love. "She was very believable in this role."

De Ferran went 2-for-3 in last year's picks, correctly calling Titanic as Best Picture and Jack Nicholson as Best Actor. Since Gil resides in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., he'll be home after the race to see if the Academy voters agree.

Derrick Walker, owner of the Valvoline/Cummins Special driven by Gil de Ferran, is scheduled to be interviewed live in-studio on TNN's RaceDay show, Sunday, March 14, 11 a.m. (Eastern time). De Ferran is scheduled for a live interview on ESPN2's RPM2Night, Tuesday, March 16, at 7 p.m. (Eastern).
