Still over cast in Houston CART qualifying got under way with a split field. Gugelmin and Fittipaldi were the fast qualifiers in the first group, but their times were not to stand the onslaught of reigning champion Gil de Ferran and the second qualifying group..

As the second group took the track qualifying times began to fall rapidly. Helio Castroneves, Kenny Brack, and Alex Tagliano began to climb the pole swapping postion several times. As time ran short, de Ferran and Brack began to shoot it out for the pole. De Ferran posted a fast lap of 59.421 with Brack close behind at 59.947, but the surprise of the day came from young Bruno Junqueira. Junqueira, 14th fastest in practice yesterday, posted the second fastest time in qualifying at 59.943. He made a great run in one of the Gannasi back-up cars after his primary ride was damaged in a incident with his teammate Memo Gidley (qualified 23rd) in practice this morning. Not to be out done, Brack, with 10 seconds on the clock, crossed the line for a last fast lap. Brack on a good run to bump Junqueira from the second spot, over-drove the car into the run off lane in turn seven. When asked what happened, Brack replied "I was just pushing, looking for a good lap.....we had a good time in the bank."

Gil de Ferran and Kenny Brack are seperated by only 5 points for the championship. With 4 races left in the season, all the points count. The Texaco Havoline Grand Prix of Houston flags off at 1:00 pm CDT Sunday.
