WEST ALLIS, WIS., (June 3, 2000) – Team KOOL Green’s Dario Franchitti returns to familiar territory tomorrow, starting on the front row with pole-winner Juan Montoya at the Miller Lite 225. Franchitti qualified second with a lap of 20.954 seconds, averaging 177.303 mph for his best qualifying effort since winning the pole at Australia last season.

Montoya’s pole was the 10th of his career and third this year. His time around the 1.032-mile oval was 20.899 seconds (177.769 mph), 0.055s better than Franchitti. Patrick Carpentier was in the last car to qualify, but could not unseat Montoya with a lap of 20.964s (177.218 mph). Carpentier will share the second row with Gil de Ferran.

Paul Tracy also put together a strong run and will start from the third row in the number five spot with a time of 21.087s (176.184 mph). Christian Fittipaldi will start on the inside of Tracy from the fifth position on the grid with his own quick time of 21.005s.

Tomorrow’s 225-lap race will be broadcast live on ABC-TV at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE:
(6th with a lap-time of 21.087 seconds / 176.184 mph)

“We went one-tenth quicker in qualifying than we had all weekend, but the KOOL car did a little bit of everything in that run. It was understeering into corners and then loose coming off. The whole field is just bunched so tight that a tenth of a second makes a huge difference in where you start. I think I have a really good race car in traffic, but we haven’t been able to find that grip level to run for the pole. I’m happy with our starting position because we’ve improved the car throughout the weekend. It should be fun out there in the race tomorrow, especially with a killer pit crew that I’m confident can pick me up spots on my stops.”

DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE:
(2nd with a lap-time of 20.954 seconds / 177.303 mph)

“We had a good car yesterday morning right off the truck and then yesterday afternoon the car started to get loose. We went back to the drawing board with the KOOL car last night and this morning we got that fixed. We continued right through qualifying with that setup. I might have had a better lap, but it took a little while for the tires to come in. The first lap was an extra warm-up lap and going for it on the second lap.

“Paul and I have been working well together. The guys have been getting good feedback from both of us and using the information to get us to the front together. We’re second and sixth, so Team KOOL Green did a great job. It’s nice to see both green cars starting up at the front again.”
