The PPIM Champ Cars driven by Cristiano da Matta and Oriol Servia qualified eighth and twelfth respectively today, for Sunday's Miller Lite 200. "Push" seemed to be the struggle of the day throughout the Champ Car paddock. Both Cristiano and Oriol complained in the problem, specifically in turns three and seven. Both the Pioneer Electronics/WorldCom team and the Telefonica team will do everything it takes tonight to get the issues in order. Cristiano and Oriol will remain in the fast group for tomorrows final qualifying, which begins at 2:30 pm EST. Saturday kicks off with practice at 10:00 am.

Date: Friday, August 11, 2000
Event: Mid-Ohio - Day One

Cristiano da Matta, #97 Pioneer Electronics/WorldCom/Toyota-Reynard

Provisional Qualifying: 8th - 1:06.549 (122.148 MPH) On the Day:
"Well, I am not crazy about the day we had today, but I think it was decent, and we know what we need to work on. My car had a lot of push. In some corners it was very, very difficult. I knew we would have work to do here, this is a tough track, but I really, really like it. I think tomorrow we should be able to pick up some positions for sure, but nothing will be easy here."

Oriol Servià, #96 Telefónica/Toyota-Reynard

Provisional Qualifying: 12th - 1:07.042 (121.249 MPH)

On the Qualifying:
"This is my first time competing here, and I knew it would be a very technical track, but it is also very physically demanding. I am pleased to have qualified twelfth today, so I will continue to be in the fast group tomorrow, that is very important. Qualifying here is critical. There is a lot of potential for a big mess on the first lap, and I don't want to be in the middle of the field like in Cleveland. I feel like the car is ok, we definitely have some work to do tonight; there is a lot of push. We will work on it, and see if we can do something better for tomorrow. I am definitely learning here, but I am really enjoying this track."
