Havoline driver da Matta completed his first full day of testing at the Milwaukee Mile Oval track in preparation for the Miller Lite 250.
WEST ALLIS, Wis. (May 9, 2002) --- After rain postponed testing yesterday, Havoline driver Cristiano da Matta was behind the wheel of his rental car rather than his Havoline Toyota-Lola-Bridgestone for the hour commute to and from the Lincolnshire, Ill-based headquarters of Newman/Haas Racing to make the most of his downtime. Luckily Mother Nature was kind to the Milwaukee area today and da Matta was able to complete a full day of testing around the famed Milwaukee Mile track in preparation for the upcoming Miller Lite 250 on June 2.
"The track didn't dry out until around 11:30 AM today and it was really windy," said da Matta who completed approx. 100 miles of testing today. "After the lunch break we spent some time waiting for the wind to die down some but it never really did. Finally we just went for it in the last hour and learned a couple of good, solid things that should help us in the race here. Hopefully the elements will work with us tomorrow and we can run a full day and build upon what we learned today. Unfortunately the wind didn't help us much today."
The Havoline Toyota team will complete the second full day of testing tomorrow at the Milwaukee Mile which will be followed by a two-day test at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course by both da Matta and Lilly driver Christian Fittipaldi beginning on Monday, May 13.
