Justin Wilson qualifies in fourth, Cristiano da Matta takes tenth position after first day on-track at Burke Lakefront Airport
CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 23, 2006 -- After a soggy morning practice session during which Cristiano da Matta (#10 RuSPORT Ford-Cosworth / Lola / Bridgestone) posted the quickest lap time, the afternoon provisional qualifying session brought some different results. Da Matta qualified for the Grand Prix of Cleveland in 10th place with a time of 58.499 seconds, while his teammate, Justin Wilson (#9 CDW / RuSPORT Ford-Cosworth / Lola / Bridgestone) recorded a best-lap time of 57.312 seconds and qualified in fourth position on the Burke Lakefront Airport circuit.
"We've tried a couple of different things between Justin and myself," said da Matta. "Because of the weather this morning, we were unable to figure out what was good and what was bad. In qualifying, I think it was clear that the path Justin took was a little better than what we tried on my car. As a team, I think we have to put the cars on the scales and figure out what works best, so we can try to improve for tomorrow."
"I'm reasonably pleased with the progress we've made," said Wilson. "We've found a little bit of speed, and we've been quicker. But we've still got some work to do overnight to get ready for final qualifying, and hopefully, we'll be closer to the front of the grid. But today, fourth is respectable, and I think we're in the ballpark. We're pretty quick over half the track...we just need figure out the other half."
"It was a good day, but not a great day for the CDW car #9 team," said RuSPORT president Jeremy Dale. "Justin isn't very completely happy with the car he's got right now. He muscled it around the track for a lap, and he did a great job in qualifying. Fourth position is a good result today, and is certainly a big improvement from where we were on in Cleveland on Friday, last year. But we've got some work to do, and the team is confident they will be able to affect some changes on the car and move forward."
"Cristiano and his car #10 team are struggling a little bit," continued Dale. "Tenth position is not a great result for us, and I know that the team knows they've got some work to do. Cleveland is such a unique track, and is such a unique environment for racing, that getting Cristiano comfortable is very important, and we need to do some work in that area. The team will put the work in, and try to march up the grid. Tomorrow is another day."
Final qualifying for the 2006 Grand Prix of Cleveland Presented by U.S. Bank will take place on Saturday, June 24, at 2:00 pm EDT.
