Alex Zanardi (Target Honda Reynard) became the first back-to-back winner in the 17-year history of the Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland Presented by Star Bank last year when he drove to an 8.422 second victory over Michael Andretti before 70,268 fans at Burke Lakefront Airport. Zanardi averaged 112.449 miles per hour and led a race-high 68 of 100 laps while scoring his third consecutive victory and his fifth of the season. Andretti's podium finish was his third of the season and the fifth of his career at Cleveland. Dario Franchitti (KOOL Honda Reynard) finished third for his second career podium performance, topped only by a runner-up showing at Long Beach earlier in the season. The victory allowed Zanardi to take a commanding lead over Greg Moore (Player's/Indeck Mercedes Reynard) in the PPG Cup points race when Moore finished 25th due to contact after three laps. Zanardi headed to Toronto with 155 points, followed by Moore with 96 and Jimmy Vasser (Target Honda Reynard), Zanardi's Target/Chip Ganassi Racing teammate, with 92.
