Christopher R. Pook to serve as Grand Marshal for 28th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.
LONG BEACH, Calif. (April 4, 2002) - Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) President and CEO Christopher R. Pook, who created the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach 28 years ago, will return to the race this year as its Grand Marshal.
Pook, 61, left the Grand Prix Association last December and has been charged with the task of transforming the 23-year-old race sanctioning body into a 21st-century organization.
"There couldn't have been a better choice," said Jim Michaelian, who replaced Pook as president and CEO of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach. "Chris' immense contribution to the success of the TGPLB is well known, and what a better time to recognize these efforts than to honor him on his first return to Long Beach in his role as CART President and CEO. But I promised him that we wouldn't take up too much of his time on the weekend so he can tend to his numerous CART duties. I'm sure all the fans will join with me in welcoming him back to Long Beach."
"I'm deeply honored to be the Grand Marshal of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach," said Pook. "It is with a great deal of personal and professional pride that I return home to Long Beach in my new capacity as President and CEO. To be able to serve as Grand Marshal for a race that means so much to me is truly special."
Pook will take part in the pre-race ceremonies on Sunday at the Grand Prix, which will get underway at approximately 11:30 a.m. The green flag drops on the 90-lap race at approximately 12:45 p.m.
The 28th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach will take place April 12-14 on a 1.97-mile, 11-turn temporary race circuit through the downtown streets of Long Beach, Calif. For tickets or race information, call (888) 82-SPEED, or visit the official race Web site at www.longbeachgp.com.
