SURGERY SIDELINES HERTA FOR THE WEEK
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Championship Car driver Bryan Herta, who pilots the Shell Ford-Cosworth Reynard for Team Rahal in the CART FedEx Championship Series, will be off the test track for at least a week while recovering from an emergency appendectomy. According to doctors at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, Calif., the 30-minute procedure went very well and Herta is resting comfortably. He is expected to return home this week and be back in the cockpit for the season-opening Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami on March 21. A Valencia resident, Herta, 28, began suffering abdominal pains on Saturday before being admitted to the hospital late Monday. "Bryan is recovering nicely," said Team Rahal General Manager Scott Roembke, "and we're glad of that. He is obviously disappointed that this has interrupted what has been an excellent winter testing program for him, but he's confident, as are we, that he'll be back in form at Miami." The defending Grand Prix of Monterey champion and a six-time CART pole sitter, Herta unofficially broke his own year-old track record in testing at Laguna Seca Raceway last week. He is among the early favorites to challenge for the PPG Cup in 1999. Cards may be sent to Bryan at:
