Bridgestone Motorsport engineers brought a proven product to the three days of test sessions at Sebring, and the Champ Car teams and drivers reaped the benefits. The 18 drivers who took to the test course completed 3,463 laps, some 5,780 miles, and the Potenza race tires were with them every step of the way.
The tire specification selected for use this week is the same as Bridgestone employed in its debut season with Champ Car in 2002, at street-course races in Denver and Surfers Paradise, Australia. The Spring Training choice was made with the 2003 season opener in mind since the same specification is on tap for use in the inaugural Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
It is there Feb. 21-23 that Bridgestone officially launches its program as Presenting Sponsor to the Champ Car World Series. In addition at St. Pete, the world's largest tire and rubber company will begin its second year as the Official Tire for the Champ Cars and serve as Official Tire of the grand prix.
Quote from Joe Barbieri, Project Supervisor, Bridgestone Motorsport: "The past three days provided an excellent opportunity for new and old teams alike to familiarize themselves with the Bridgestone tires' fine characteristics. Judging by the number of laps run, everyone took full advantage of the occasion. Some teams completed more than 100 miles on a single set of Potenzas, again demonstrating their trademark consistency and durability. Those attributes also were key in helping all teams hone in on the best car set-ups, which will be important when we all return to Florida for the season opener. The feedback we received this week was especially positive, with rookies and veterans alike singing the praises of the Bridgestone tires. Everyone at Bridgestone will impatiently wait out the next two weeks until we officially take our proud position as Presenting Sponsor of this most challenging championship series."
