Bridgestone "Alternate Tire" Tabbed for Trio of Road Course Events
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 23, 2004) - Bridgestone Motorsport and Champ Car World Series officials agreed to return the popular alternate tire selection for the last three permanent road course events on this year's Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford schedule.
The alternate tire, which allows each entered car sets of a higher-grip and theoretically faster Bridgestone Potenza race tire than the standard tire, will be available at the Molson Indy Montreal on Aug. 27-29, the Bridgestone Grand Prix of Monterey Sept. 10-12 and the Gran Premio Telmex-Gigante Presented by Banamex/Visa at Mexico City Nov. 5-7. Teams will have at their disposal three alternate tires sets at Montreal and two sets each at Monterey and Mexico City. Each car must use at least one alternate set during a race and its crew is free to use the other sets at any time during the weekend.
"The alternate tire has benefited competition in its uses earlier this season at Long Beach and Portland, we expect it to do so at these three road-course events coming up," said Al Speyer, executive director for Bridgestone Motorsport. "The ability of teams to vary when they use the alternate set in the race makes for a wide range of race strategies. It means some cars may be on the quicker alternate Potenzas while others are on the standard Bridgestone tire, which should increase passing opportunities at different junctures of the races for different teams. Bridgestone has also developed an improved tire sidewall identification system that should make it much easier for fans in the stands and those watching on television to know when a car is using the alternate tires."
Bridgestone is the Official Tire of Champ Car, supplying every series entry with Potenza racing radials since 2002. At the upcoming events where the alternate tire is in use, each car will receive six sets of the standard Potenza tire and two sets of the alternate for the weekend. The only stipulation is that at least one of the alternate sets be used at some point in the race.
"The alternate tire has been a great addition to the Champ Car scene this season and we expect its use at these three events to increase the excitement level and uncertainty for the race outcome once again," said John Lopes, Champ Car Vice President of Operations. "Champ Car appreciates Bridgestone's effort to infuse new energy into the competition of our events."
