BRACK-2-BRACK Brack claims second straight race

WEST ALLIS, WI . . . Team Rahal's Shell driver Kenny Brack led 130 laps, including the last 43 of the race, en route to capturing his second consecutive CART win in the Miller Lite 225 at the Milwaukee Mile in Milwaukee. Brack's victory is his fourth top-five result of the 2001 season and pushed his lead in the CART Championship to a commanding 21-point lead after five races.

Brack started on the pole, his fifth front row start of the 2001 season, and avoided a near disaster with fellow front row starter Helio Castroneves on lap one. Brack led the first 80 lap of the race dueling with Michael Andretti around the 1-mile oval. Following his second pit stop on lap 135 Brack pressured Andretti and finally took the lead for good on lap 183 with a dazzling pass on the front straight. Brack held off repeated challenges from Andretti over the final 40 laps for his second Champ Car win.

"This is great especially because it was under difficult conditions this weekend since we only had a couple of hours of practice time entering today," said Brack. "We had good fuel strategy again and Scott Roembke and Don Halliday called a great race. I was sitting right behind Michael for a lot of laps and just saving fuel. With this wing package, it's hard to pass. If you get a lead, you're a sitting duck for the guys behind me. I didn't know what went wrong with Michael's car. I thought he was saving fuel too. Then after I got the lead, I saw that he had a problem. It was nice to have Bobby [Rahal] here this weekend. It doesn't make a difference in our performance but it is very good for the team's morale.'

The back-to-back wins are the first consecutive wins for Team Rahal in the ten-year history of the team. It also marks the first time since Bobby Rahal's championship season of 1992 that the team has won multiple races in a season. The win was also the 100th for Lola Cars International the constructors of Team Rahal's B1/00 chassis B1/00 and it marked the first consecutive CART victories for Ford-Cosworth since 1996.

"It was a great victory for our Shell team and Kenny," said Bobby Rahal. It was fantastic to see it in person this time. I didn't see the Japan win. I had to follow it on my computer on CART.com and the CART Radio Network. This is very special and shows the dedication of the members of this team. I never won here at Milwaukee so this is very exciting and Kenny extended his point lead. Now, we have to work on Max's car and get it up front too."

The day was also productive for Team Rahal's other as Miller Lite driver Max Papis drove a steady race posting an eighth place finish, his second consecutive top-ten result. It was Papis third points paying finish of 2001.

Team Rahal and the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series will resume with the Detroit Grand Prix on Belle Isle in two weeks (June 15-17).
