Kenny Brack turned the first qualifying session of the new season into a showcase for Team Rahal's new Ford-Cosworth/Lola combination. Brack, the 2000 CART Rookie of the Year, paced the session with a lap of 100.665-mph capturing Team Rahal's first pole since September of 1999 when Bryan Herta captured the pole at Laguna Seca. The pole was Brack's first in CART and his first since 1996 when he was racing in the Formula 3000 series in Europe.
Max Papis rebounded from a difficult Friday afternoon to post the 11th fastest time of qualifying with a speed of 98.996 mph. The Miller Lite car was sixth in the morning session but Papis fought a grip problem as the track warmed in the sunny Mexican afternoon.
Brack will lead the field to the green flag for Sunday's season opener (4:00 PM ET, ABC) marking the eleventh pole position in Team Rahal history. He is the fourth different driver to capture a pole for Team Rahal joining Bobby Rahal, Herta and Max Papis.
Brack and the Shell team had to overcome a troublesome morning session in which the car suffered damage in an off course excursion. Brack finished the morning session 22nd overall.

"I'm a little disappointed with my time. The car was much improved over Friday and we were sixth in morning practice. At the start of qualifying, we jumped up to fifth and the track felt better. But later, I lost the grip we had found earlier and I got blocked in traffic on the last couple of laps. I'm happy for Kenny and his team but I was hoping to be close to the front of the field. We'll just have to get the Miller Lite car in a good race setup. Passing is possible in certain places and we'll have to find those places Sunday."
- Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola -
"I want to thank my team, I want to thank Ford, Lola and Shell. Ford made a great effort over the winter to give us a good engine. We made a lot of changes over the winter, we changed chassis and I really didn't think we'd be as competitive as soon as we have been. But as soon as we rolled the car off the truck it's been pretty good...I think the car will be pretty good overall on both road courses and ovals, I just figured we would have more to learn on the road courses. It's a good start to the season. We wanted to do well for Bobby (Rahal) this weekend after last weekend with Formula One (and the Jaguar team). It's good to see him back with us this weekend. I ripped up the front wing this morning in practice but we still thought we had a good car for qualifying. And it showed this afternoon. Now we have to get everything ready for the race."
