Justin will start from P2 on the grid for Sunday's Bavaria Champ Car Grand Prix by virtue of his provisional pole on Friday. The #9 CDW car lacked outright pace in today's dry conditions and Justin's best lap in final qualifying of 1:19.710s (127.813 mph) was only 9th quickest. Sebastien Bourdais took pole for Newman/Haas/Lanigan with a 1:18.765s lap (129.347 mph). Tristan Gommendy (PKV) was 2nd quickest in the session (1:19.025s) and lines up 3rd on the grid.
A problem with one of the softer, red-sidewalled Bridgestone Potenza tyres may well have contributed to the disappointing result. Even so, Justin and the #9 CDW RuSPORT team have long night ahead of them as they try to find a more competitive set-up for Sunday's race.
"I'm very disappointed with our lack of pace today", said Justin. "We just couldn't quite work it out in qualifying and had a few problems. A rear tyre delaminated during our second stint, but I'm not sure if that was all of our problem or not. We're fortunate that we got the front row slot from yesterday and now we've got to concentrate on making a good race car."
The Bavaria Champ Car Grand Prix gets underway at 1pm local time (12pm UK time) tomorrow.
