Veteran CART Champcar racer Michael Andretti officially opened the Texaco Grand Prix of Houston's street circuit today when he drove his Newman-Haas Texaco Swift-Ford through a banner strung across the course's start/finish line in front of the George R. Brown Convention Center. Prior to the banner breaking, Andretti and Houston Mayor Lee Brown spoke of the joint efforts of Houston, CART, and Texaco to put the racing event together. Andretti also mentioned that Texas and the Houston area have some of the highest television ratings for the CART series, so it is only natural that the series come to Houston. On hand for the ceremony were Newman- Haas co-owner Carl Haas, Michael's father Mario Andretti and Newman-Haas teammate Christian Fittipaldi.

The Newman-Haas team also used this opportunity to unveil the special paint scheme that will be used on Andretti's Champcar during this event. The black car has a red nose with yellow stripe and red and yellow striping on the side pods.

Teams have been arriving in Houston since earlier in the week, and many are already set up in the air conditioned paddock on the first floor of the Brown Convention Center.

Race cars will first take to the streets of Houston at 8:25 am on Friday as Toyota Atlantic practice begins. CART Champcar practice begins at 10:30 am. The inaugural Texaco Grand Prix of Houston for the FedEx CART World Series will be flagged off Sunday, October 4, at 3:00 pm CDT.
