Michael Andretti laid down the challenge to the younger drivers with a dominant fastest time during the morning warm-up. Andretti put in a 25.205 second lap during a run of fast laps near the end of the session. Tora Takagi was the closest challenger with a late flyer to finish just 0.02 seconds behind.

The session was run shortly after the ASCAR practice session but the track needed several laps for the line to be cleared, with most drivers setting their fastest laps in the closing minutes of the session. The weather conditions were cold and overcast.

The next 5 drivers behind Andretti and Takagi were separated by 0.04 seconds. Many of the faster drivers concentrated on race preparation with da Matta, Junqueira, Franchitti, and Tagliani at least 0.3 seconds behind. Junqueira even sat out the final few minutes of the session while the mechanics worked on his car.

Dario Franchitti explained the problems encountered by the drivers during the warm-up: "The car was oversteering a little bit more because the air is denser and colder, and the tyres took longer to warm up so the first few laps were a bit slow."

The Rockingham 500 will take place at 12:30GMT over 211 laps of the Rockingham Motor Speedway.
