AMERICAN-BORN CHAMP CAR STAR A.J. ALLMENDINGER TAKES THE LEAD IN THE SPEED CHANNEL DRIVER RANKINGS
INDIANAPOLIS (August 23, 2006) -- Forsythe Championship Racing knew that it made a key acquisition in signing U.S.-born open-wheel star A.J. Allmendinger (#7 Indeck Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) in the middle of the 2006 Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford season, but even fabled team owner Gerald Forsythe likely didn't realize that he had signed the top driver in the world.
But this week, Allmendinger is just that as he takes the lead in the SPEED Driver Rakings for this week, climbing to the top of the list that rates drivers from all around the world including Champ Car, NASCAR, Formula 1 and the Indy Racing League
Allmendinger moved to the top of this week's SPEED Driver Rankings for the first time this season, joining points leader Sebastien Bourdais (#1 McDonald's Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) as the only drivers from an American open-wheel series to lead the rankings this year. The Californian moved to the top on the strength of his fourth win of the year -- all earned after his move to Forsythe -- when he romped to victory two weeks ago in Denver.
The former Champ Car Atlantic champion and Champ Car rookie of the year holds a narrow lead over former NASCAR champion Matt Kenseth in the ratings system developed by STATS Inc. and done in conjunction with the motorsports cable network. Current year results, last 10 races, last five races and last race are factored in equally, with an adjustment factor to compensate for the series different scoring systems. In addition, a competition difficulty factor has been included to balance the competitive depth of each series.
Allmendinger will look to solidify his perch above the rankings with this weekend's Champ Car Grand Prix de Montreal, taking place on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve Friday through Sunday, August 25-27.
