AARWBA Banquet Approaching

(January 11, 1998) - Four of the top five finishers in the 1998 FedEx Championship Series will be honored as members of the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association's 29th All-America Team at the annual AARWBA banquet, slated for Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Renaissance Long Beach Hotel in Long Beach, Calif.

The quartet is led by two-time series champion Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda), who earned First Team honors in the Open Wheel division for the second consecutive year. Series runner-up Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda) was a Second Team selection while third-place Dario Franchitti (KOOL Reynard Honda) and fourth-place Greg Moore (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes) received Honorable Mention. PPG-Dayton Indy Lights champion Cristiano da Matta, who joins the Arciero-Wells/MCI WorldCom Racing Champ Car team this season, earned an at-large berth on the First Team.

The 29th AARWBA All-America Team includes competitors from the open wheel, stock car, road racing, drag racing and short track ranks. The AARWBA banquet is open to the public, and reservations may be made through Dusty Brandel, at 818-842-7005. The highlight of the evening will be presentation of the annual Jerry Titus Award to the driver who received the highest vote total for the All-America Team.
