Takuma Sato and Sage Karam suffered the most damage in the lap one crash.
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indy 500 field has gotten a bit smaller just a couple corners into the 200 lap-race.
Prior to the start of the race, Alex Tagliani struggled to get his car into gear, but eventually joined the field after a tense couple minutes. Moments later, Conor Daly stopped on track with smoke pouring from the back of his Honda. He is out of the race with electrical issues.
On the opening lap, Takuma Sato was trying to make up ground from the eighth row of the grid. He attempted to make a daring three-wide pass on the outside and ran out of room, making contact with Sage Karam. Both got into the wall and suffered major damage as Ryan Briscoe spun in the aftermath, colliding with James Davison.
Karam has been checked, cleared and released from the infield medical center.
"All good, soft hit," said Karam.
"I knew going into turn one, he had a run, but I didn't know he was dumb enough to go on the outside. The guy needs to wake up a little bit."
Contact under caution
The restart was called off when d Simona de Silvestro ran into the back of Juan Pablo Montoya, both suffering wing damage. They came to pit road for replacements and are back in the race, which went back green on lap 13.
