Christian Fittipaldi To Compete In NASCAR Busch Series Miami 300
Open-Wheel Star to Test with Busch Team on October 30 at Homestead-Miami Speedway
MIAMI, FL (October 29, 2001) -- Christian Fittipaldi, current driver with the Newman/Haas ChampCar team, will attempt to qualify and race in the NASCAR Busch Series Miami 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway on November 10 in an entry fielded by Innovative Motorsports. The Miami 300 is the Saturday race of the NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series weekend, November 9-11 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Fittipaldi will prepare for the Miami 300 with a NASCAR Busch Series testing session on Tuesday, October 30 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
"This is very exciting for me and I hope to be well received by those in NASCAR," said Fittipaldi. "I have long admired their racing and welcome an opportunity to be a part of it."
Fittipaldi, nephew of racing legend Emerson Fittipaldi, joins a very small fraternity of drivers who have raced in Formula One, ChampCar and NASCAR. Fittipaldi, born in Sao Paulo, Brazil and current resident of Key Biscayne, will attempt to join Mario Hernandez of Miami as the only Hispanic drivers to ever race in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series. Hernandez made his debut at the Sam's Town 250 in Memphis on October 13.
"It's tremendous to see Christian Fittipaldi will be a part of the NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Grand National Series weekend here in South Florida," said Curtis Gray, President of Homestead-Miami Speedway. "This is a major event for race fans throughout the South Florida market and the world." Fittiapaldi's team will be sponsored by Mike's Hard Lemonade and will be a second entry to the Innovative Motorsports' No. 48 Goulds Pumps Chevrolet driven by Kenny Wallace.
"We are very happy to provide Christian with this opportunity" said George DeBidart of Innovative Motorsports. "We welcome his talents to our race team and respect his desire to attempt to race in NASCAR. He is as pure a racer as we have seen, and we believe that his talent will translate to stock car racing."
Fans are invited to see Fittipaldi during testing sessions at Homestead-Miami Speedway from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30. Along with Fittipaldi, NASCAR drivers Kevin Harvick, Geoffrey Bodine, Rickey Hendrick, Jeff Green, Jason Keller, AJ Alsup and Shawna Robinson will be testing at Homestead-Miami Speedway on October 30. To view the testing, fans should enter at the gift shop located at the first floor lobby of the Speedway's Administrative Building. Fans will not be permitted in the infield area.
