On lap 73, Newgarden made contact with the No. 25 car of Marco Andretti, resulting in a drive-through penalty
First podium and highest IZOD IndyCar Series finish for Josef Newgarden.
The 34-year-old Germany-native, Lucas Luhr, driving the No. 97 SFHR car, was in 17th place when an engine fire ended his day short of the checkered flag.
With the combined efforts of Rotondo Weirich (RW) and Muscle Milk, American Le Mans Series LMP1 championship points leader Lucas Luhr will race his first laps in an open wheel car for SFHR.
Newgarden's race were ended before it started due to car failure
During the second stint of the race, Newgarden fell a lap behind and was never able to make it up.
Not only does Newgarden believe in himself, but he also has faith in his team as he prepares for his second Indianapolis 500.
Josef Newgarden: "The positive is that the car is in one piece and we finished 13th, which is not horrible."
Even with a solid top-10 finish, Newgarden's mindset is nowhere near complacent.
Newgarden's focus has turned to getting proper rest, knowing how mentally and physically taxing the 90-lap race will be on Sunday.
The first take in St. Petersburg was cut short after 50 laps due to a mechanical issue.
Josef Newgarden: "It is a shame to have a mechanical issue; you don't want to start a season that way..."
