Three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves and teammate Will Power took the day off after participating in Saturday’s first practice session.
In his first official practice day, Allmendinger paced the three Team Penske entries with a fast lap of 218.967 mph.
Practice will continue Sunday, May 12, 2013, from noon to 6:00 p.m. EDT.
AJ Allmendinger will contest the IndyCar Detroit event in the Penske Racing No. 2 Quicken Loans Chevrolet.

For the fourth year, Penske’s Will Power earned the pole on the street circuit in St. Pete. The surprise was Japanese racer Takuma Sato taking the second grid slot for AJ Foyt Racing.

Testing at the Barber Motorsports Park ended with the Australian maintaining the fastest lap time. Up next is the St. Pete race on March 24.
AJ Allmendinger drove for Roger Penske's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team in 2012 before he was suspended for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
After being out of an Indy car since 2006, A. J. Allmendinger stepped into a Team Penske Chevrolet and quickly got up to speed during the preseason IndyCar Series testing held at Sebring.
The partnership of PPG and Penske Racing dates back to 1984. It includes all of Penske's NASCAR and IndyCar teams.
AJ Allmendinger lost his ride last year due to failing the NASCAR random drug test. He ended up in the NASCAR Road to Recovery and made his return to racing. Now it appears his former team boss will give him a shot in an IndyCar.

Will Power: self-discipline, control of oneself and one’s conduct and one heck of a racer but for the third consecutive time, he lost out on taking the IndyCar championship. The Team Penske driver thus becomes our 14th top moment.
