Cooper MacNeil takes first ever IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge podium at Sebring
-Sebring, FL.- 18 year old sensational rookie Cooper MacNeil turned heads this past week in Sebring recording two second place podium finishes in the premier class of IMSA GT3 Cup competition. MacNeil driving the No. 20 WeatherTech/AJR GT3 for storied Porsche veterans Alex Job Racing wasted little time setting the pace as one of the competitors to beat for the remainder of the year.
Race one, saw MacNeil qualify second and from the drop of the green flag dominate second place, while running times that frequently eclipsed those of the leader; MacNeil was able to stay within striking distance until a fuel pickup issue halted his blistering pace. MacNeil would take his first podium in race one.
The second race had MacNeil starting third, based on fast lap time from the first race. On lap 12, a caution bunched the 39 car field back-up playing right into the hands of the MacNeil who had been managing his tires. On the restart, the field went into turn-two and some shoving ensued with the top three runners having contact. MacNeil came through the melee in second, where he would later finish.
“What a great weekend,” MacNeil remarked after the events, “This was my first race in this series and to start it off with a pair of second places is pretty good. The Alex Job prepared car was phenomenal. I also need to thank WeatherTech.com, the floor mats in there helped me to go faster.”
MacNeil is supported exclusively by MacNeil Automotive Products and WeatherTech with exclusive partnerships from Risi Competizione, Alex Job Racing, Fall-Line Motorsports, Laurel BMW of Westmont and ProMotion Driver Development for 2011.
Round 2 will be Apr. 29 - May 1 at Miller Motorsports Park in Toole, UT.
