Mexico's Memo Gidley remains in hospital after his massive shunt at Daytona.
Memo Gidley remains in hospital after a violent crash between his Gainsco Cehvrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype and the Risi Ferrari of Matteo Malucelli.
During the third hour of racing, Malucelli’s Ferrari lost power heading toward the kink. Gidley was tucked under another car as they approached the slower vehicle.
Gidley pulled out and made heavy contact with the back of Malucelli’s car.
There was a red flag for just under an hour as safety teams removed Gidley from the car.
He suffered injuries to his left arm and left leg, and has undergone surgeries for those injuries, but will remain in hospital until doctors can repair a fracture in his back.
Malucelli was released yesterday having suffered a severe cerebral concussion.
Friend of Gidley, Mike Gausch said via Twitter: "I visited Memo in the hospital. He will be OK, needs time to heal up, lots of surgery, pins and rods, bionic Memo Gidley coming soon."
