DYSON FORD 1-2 AT NAPA GRAND PRIX OF ATLANTA

The Dyson Ford team swept the top two spots in last weekend1s Exxon World SportsCar Championship race at Road Atlanta. Butch Leitzinger and James Weaver combined for the win in the #16 Ford R&S MK III, while Elliott Forbes-Robinson and John Paul, Jr. drove the #20 Dyson Ford to second place. Third place went to the #30 MOMO Ferrari piloted by Antonio Hermann and Andrea Montermini (Montermini set fastest race lap) ... The Panoz GTR1 took the Exxon Supreme GTS-1 win in the hands of Doc Bundy and Andy Wallace. In Exxon Supreme GTS-2 competition, the team of Franz Konrad and Phillip Peter combined for the win in the #61 Konrad Porsche 911 Turbo. In GTS-3 competition, Jim Matthews and David Murry picked up their first win in the series driving Matthew's #39 Carolina Turkey-sponsored Porsche 911.

COUNTDOWN TO THE DODGE DEALERS GRAND PRIX

CONNECTICUT LOTTERY SPONSORSHIP -- It's now the Connecticut Lottery presents the Dodge Dealers Grand Prix at Lime Rock. As part of the pre-race promotion, the Connecticut Lottery will be airing a advertising radio campaign inviting race fans to the Lime Rock weekend for the opportunity to win a brand new 1997 Dodge Neon Sport.

PRE-RACE PUBLICITY -- SportsCar teams planning to enter the Lime Rock races should be sure to send press releases and press kits to Jeff Eichelberger or Roy Hasty in the Lime Rock Park Communications Department, P.O. Box, 111, Lakeville, CT 06039 or fax (860) 435-5009. The same information should also be sent to the SportsCar Communications Department .

MEDIA DAY -- Drivers interested in participating in the event media Day, Tues, May 20, from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm, should contact the Lime Rock Communications Department at (860) 435-5006.

TRACK IMPROVEMENTS -- New curbing on the exits of several turns has been added, including the right-hander leading onto No Name Straight, at West Bend and at the Downhill. Plus, there has been additional paving of paddock roads.

HOSPITALITY -- SportsCar is making available two separate turnkey hospitality programs for teams and sponsors. Each program is designed to provide the special amenities, atmosphere, and catering normally available just for larger groups. FERRARI CHALLENGE

-- The second event on the 1997 Ferrari Challenge schedule is this weekend at Texas World Speedway in College Station, TX. The event, hosted by Ferrari of Houston, is traditionally one of the larger and more popular events on the schedule. Results will be available Monday on SportsCar Fax on Demand.

COUNTDOWN TO THE FIRST UNION SIX HOURS OF THE GLEN RACE PARTY IN CORNING -- SportsCar drivers and show cars are requested for a pre-race party in downtown Corning, NY on Friday, May 30th, from 7:00 - 10:30 pm. The party features entertainment, food, beverages, and SportsCar drivers signing autographs and race cars on display. FRIDAY IS POLE DAY -- The front row of the First Union Six Hours of the Glen will be decided in a special qualifying session on Friday, May 30, as part of the new Pole Day activities at the track.

TRACK IMPROVEMENTS -- An unusually mild winter has allowed construction crews to work throughout the off-season and stay well ahead of schedule on improvement projects at The Glen. Facility improvements include repaving the 3Boot2 section of the Grand Prix course, construction of the new 3,000 seat Pit Terrace seating, renovations to Family Camping and completion of reconstruction of the Paddock.

REGISTRATION & RIG PARKING -- SportsCar registration opens Wednesday, May 28 from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm. Paddock rig parking is also on Wednesday, from 12:00 noon - 5:00 pm.

TEST DAY -- A Promoter1s test day is scheduled for Thursday, May 29. Cost is $250 per car. Contact Ann Connor at The Glen (607) 535-2486, ext 260.

FIRST UNION FAMILY FUN TENT -- The new First Union-sponsored Family Fun Tent will debut at the SportsCar weekend and feature free activities designed for the entire family. The tent will open at noon on Saturday and Sunday, with activities including slot cars, musical entertainment, a moon jump, fun for youngsters and a Saturday afternoon driver autograph session. Saturday evening, ticket buyers are invited to enjoy a free picnic dinner and racing movies -- followed by fireworks in the camping area. There will be a small charge for credential holders.

FIRST UNION MEDIA CONFERENCE -- The pre-race Media event is scheduled for Thursday, May 29 at 12:00 noon in the Budweiser Media Tower.

REDMAN GRAND MARSHALL -- Brian Redman, the inaugural Camel GTP champion back in 1981, will serve as Grand Marshall for this year's First Union Six Hours of The Glen.

DRIVER MEDICAL EXAMS REQUIRED -- Per Tech Bulletin #2 issued on March 5, 1997, all drivers holding current competition licenses must have a current (within the last 6 months) completed medical examination form. The medical examination forms are available via SportsCar1s Fax on Demand -- Call (201) 947-7455 from the handset of your fax machine and request document 4640 for SportsCar Membership and FIA License Applications. Please complete the exam form and mail/fax to Sally Burnett at the SportsCar office by May, 19. If you are unable to get the completed form to SportsCar by May 19, be sure to bring a copy to SportsCar registration.

LAMBORGHINI CHAMPIONSHIP -- The Lamborghini Diablo Roadster R that will be used in the Lamborghini Championship by Star Racing was on the track for demonstration laps as a prelude to last Sunday1s Exxon World SportsCar Championship race. This marked the first major on-track demonstration of the car that will be run in the proposed race series. Two-time Exxon Supreme GT champion Pete Halsmer piloted the Diablo Roadster R for it1s demonstration laps ... 3I didn't realize that these cars had so much power,2 Halsmer said. 3This is a very good performing car with lots of torque. And the V-12 engine sounded great! The track was oily from the race that had just finished, so when I really got on it for the first time the tail started to step out, but it was very controllable. A well-balanced car. The car is beautiful, I like the roadster version. I think it will be quite interesting to see twenty of these cars on the track at the same time.2

GRATIOT NAMED TECHNICAL ADMINISTRATOR -- Gordon Gratiot began his duties as Technical Administrator for SportsCar last weekend at Road Atlanta. He will focus on administering technical regulations for the Exxon World SportsCar Championship and Exxon Supreme GT Series Presented by Virgin Interactive. Gratiot brings more than 20 years of experience in the automotive industry, including 10 years with IMSA/SportsCar, serving as Director of Operations for the sanctioning body from 1989 to 1992. Recently Gratiot has served as Operations Manager for the Hawaii Grand Prix, as well as directing Morse Motorsports1 Lotus entry in the Bridgestone Supercar Championship and Dave White Racing1s GTS-3 Porsche program.

TERRY MACDONALD -CADIEUX UPDATE -- Terry MacDonald-Cadieux, who was injured this past weekend in the 3-hour SPEEDVISION Cup for Stock SportsCars race, is home recuperating. Terry suffered two fractures of the C-2 vertebrae and is wearing a halo and upper-body brace to stabilize the injury.
