New Albany, Ohio (July 23, 2003) California motorsports fans will experience the power and size of a race truck during a demonstration by the Super Truck Racing Association of North America (STRANA) during this weekend's American Le Mans Series at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma.
The demonstration featuring STRANA driver Mike Ryan in his purpose-built Pike's Peak Hill Climb truck is a prelude to three Tonka Super Truck Celebrity Challenge Races to be held later this summer. Those races are already attracting star drivers, including Boris Said, Anthony Lazzaro, Johnny O'Connell and Kevin Buckler, all of whom signed letters of interest to compete for charity.
"Interest and excitement about the Tonka Super Truck Racing Series continues to grow and we want to feed it, which is why we're looking forward to coming to Infineon," said STRANA Executive Director Brian Till, the former IndyCar driver and Toyota Atlantic Champion.
"It's been a three-year process to take STRANA from an idea to where it is today," said Till. "Sure, we would have liked to move faster, but our primary concern is doing it right, putting a good product on the track, and becoming an exciting and successful motorsports property."
Ryan, of North Hollywood, is scheduled to perform high-speed laps during all three days at Infineon.
Tonka Celebrity Challenge events are scheduled for Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario (Aug. 15-17); Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc. (Aug. 22-24); and Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga., as part of Petit Le Man (Oct. 15-18).
Those races will feature STRANA/Tonka Super Truck Racing Series' super trucks, which are being produced by Elan Motorsports Technologies in Baselton, Ga. Additional details such as which drivers will compete at which events, and the charities for which they'll be competing will be announced closer to the date of the events.
Suppliers to the Tonka Celebrity Challenge events include Haldex, Alcoa, ArvinMeritor, Continental, ZF Group NAO, ZF Sachs, Fluidyne High Performance, Optima Batteries, Stack, Eibach, Shields, K&N, ATL, and Sparco. Other STRANA sponsors include www.1800DRIVERS.com, Truckin' Bozo Radio Network and America Trucking On The Road magazine.
Based in suburban Columbus, Ohio, STRANA is the governing body for class-8 super truck racing in North America. Its mission is to promote super truck racing and the trucking and transportation industry.
