ROBINSON RACING TEAM UPDATE SUPERFLO 12 HOURS OF SEBRING PRESENTED BY CHRYSLER WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 1997
QUALIFYING RESULTS: SESSION 1 Robinson Racing's two Oldsmobile Aurora's performed strongly this afternoon in the first Exxon Supreme GT Series qualifying session for Professional SportsCar Racing's 45th annual SUPERFLO 12 Hours of Sebring Presented by Chrysler.
The #11 Hot Wheels Aurora, driven by Jack Baldwin, set the second fastest GTS-1 lap, with a time of 201.901 while the #75 74 Hunting Ranch Aurora, driven by Joe Pezza, was fourth fastest, setting a best lap time of 2:03.776. The Panos Esperante was the fastest GTS-1 car at 2:00.710 and the Porsche 911 driven by Hans Stuck is sandwiched between the Aurora's with a time of 202.234.
Joining Baldwin in the Hot Wheels Aurora will be the 1995 and 1996 Exxon Supreme GT Series Champion, Irv Hoerr, and team owner George Robinson. Canaska Racing owner, Victor Sifton, and Trans-Am driver Jon Gooding will co-drive the 74 Hunting Ranch Aurora with Pezza.
The second, and final, qualifying session for the Exxon Supreme GTS-1 and GTS-2 classes will run tomorrow afternoon from 3:10 pm to 3:30 pm. The SUPERFLO 12 Hours of Sebring Presented by Chrysler will run on Saturday, March 15th, starting at 10:30 am.
TEAM QUOTES JACK BALDWIN: "We were set-up better for a hot, slippery track. When the cloud cover came, the car tightened up some so we didn't have enough wing for the grip we had."
JOE PEZZA: "Other than requiring a little brake adjustment, the car ran really well. We're happy with our position and will not try to gain any time in tomorrow's qualifying session. It's now time to race."
JIM FRASER, CREW CHIEF: "Overall, I'm pleased with our positioning. It's hard right now to outrun the Panos, but we'll take our times."
VICTOR SIFTON: "This will be my second time racing the SUPERFLO 12 Hours of Sebring and I couldn't be more fortunate than to be doing it in the Aurora. Unlike Daytona where the track is smooth, Sebring is tough, bumpy, difficult for the driver and favors the purpose built race cars such as the Robinson Racing Aurora's. I think both Aurora's have a great chance of finishing in the top three. I've never driven with Joe Pezza and Jon Gooding, but their credentials speak for themselves and I'm looking forward to it. As well, I'm sure George, Irv and Jack will be going for it right away, so we should have a friendly team competition."
IRV HOERR: "I'm excited about running at Sebring since it's pretty much my home track. I think both Aurora's have a great chance here. Sebring is really a handling track and that's the Aurora's advantage. We've got a terrific crew and a fantastic combination of drivers who not only know how to win but also know each other really well. Really, either car is capable of winning." ###
